Status of the seed sector in Uganda

Introduction

The Ugandan seed sector is characterised by co-existing formal and informal systems. The formal system is responsible for improved and certified seed production through structured systems of variety development, release, multiplication, quality control, distribution, and marketing. The major players in the formal system are public institutions (government, international and national research) and the private sector (seed companies, member associations and NGOs, development agencies, community-based organisations and farmer cooperatives). All are linked together through the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Resources and Fisheries (MAAIF) and the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO).
